Termite Species That Damage Homes
Subterranean Termites
The most common and destructive type in Thailand. Build nests underground and create mud tubes to reach wooden structures. Cause severe structural damage silently and rapidly.
Drywood Termites
Live inside dry wood like door frames, window frames, and furniture. Do not need soil or moisture to survive. Leave behind fine wood dust (frass) as a sign of infestation
Dampwood Termites
Less common in homes; prefer moist or decaying wood. Typically found in water-damaged furniture or timber. Not soil-dependent but can still harm wooden structures with high moisture.
The most common termite species responsible for structural damage in urban areas is Coptotermes spp.
This species builds its nest underground at a depth of 2 to 4 meters.
Its primary food sources are dry wood and wooden materials commonly used in home construction and furniture.
