Observing Termite Bait Consumption Behavior From Initial Bait Placement to Colony Collapse (Species: Coptotermes gestroi)
1. (Installation)
Images of Termite Bait Placement:
The images show bait being placed either as a block or a bait box directly onto termite foraging paths or on areas of wood that have already been attacked by termites.
Bait boxes are used on termite foraging trails or areas where termites are actively feeding on smooth, accessible surfaces, allowing the box to be placed securely.
Bait blocks are used in narrow or confined areas where bait boxes cannot fit, such as inside small tunnels or crevices where termites are feeding. The bait is molded into a block shape to better fit the space.
2. (First Check – 2 Weeks)
After 2 weeks of bait placement, the images show that the worker termites are consuming the bait at 100%.
Each bait station records approximately 100% consumption. If any bait station shows termite consumption between 70–100%, technicians will immediately add new bait blocks to ensure that the termite feeding process continues without interruption.
Following this stage, termites will begin to experience molting failure and become progressively weakened.
3. (Second Check – 4 Weeks)
In the first image, it is observed that worker termites and some soldier termites have become pale and some have died.
There is a noticeable increase in the number of soldier termites compared to worker termites. Additionally, white fungal growth can be seen developing around the areas where dead termites are found.
In the second image, worker termites are no longer visible. Only soldier termites and secondary reproductives—the final caste remaining in the colony—are observed, indicating that the colony is close to complete collapse.
4. (Third Check – 6 Weeks)
From the images (left to right), at week 6, it is clearly observed that a large number of termite carcasses and detached termite heads are present around the bait placement areas, indicating widespread termite death.
5. (Fourth Check – 8 Weeks)
At week 8, the images show that in the baited areas where large numbers of dead termites are found, both brown and white fungal growths have developed.
Summary
The termite baiting program successfully eliminated the Coptotermes gestroi colony within 2 to 2.5 months, which is consistent with the standard timeframe for baiting system performance. Throughout the process, termite behavior changes were observed, including complete bait consumption, worker termites becoming pale, sluggish, and showing signs of molting failure. An increasing number of soldier termites compared to workers, the appearance of secondary reproductives, the presence of numerous dead termites, and the growth of white and brown fungi at bait placement sites further confirmed the gradual collapse of the colony. Based on these findings, the colony elimination is confirmed.
